If you are or ever been a chocoholic, I just want to let you know—you're not alone. I used to be that girl in high school who carried a chocolate bar in my bag every single day of the week. We know eating KitKats everyday is probably not the best thing to do for our health, but we also don’t really know why we can’t stop, and we don’t want to. Chocolate lets us feel comfort, belonging, and this deep satisfaction which research has explained to be the same type of dopamine release humans only typically achieve from “sex, laughing, or watching your favorite Olympian win a gold” (Psychology Today).

The story behind what lead me to having this chocolate concoction almost everyday is pretty unoriginal. I was caught in a typical day of going down the YouTube rabbit hole for “healthy breakfast” ideas back when I was deeply entrenched in diet culture. Update: I think I’ve done better lately on not getting too involved with trying to “health-ify" every food. I’m also definitely not saying that there’s something inherently wrong with having a KitKat every now and then. But with KitKat having 20 grams of sugar per packet, and the World Health Organization claiming that only about 25 grams a day is actually healthy, I think it’s safe to say we can definitely have too much of a good thing.

I’ve been seeing a lot of fitness influencers like Chloe Ting and many others put almond butter on their oatmeal, but what sealed the deal for me was this specific YouTuber, Liezl Jayne Strydom, who’s apparently a fellow chocoholic and shared her “unusual breakfast.” It’s a giant bowl of chocolate oatmeal, and her video on it has over 1.2 million views on YouTube. Clearly, she got something right, so I tried it and haven’t had regular plain oatmeal ever since. While both youtubers used old fashioned oats, your home girl only has the time and energy for the 2 minute, microwavable quick oats, and I have absolutely no shame in that.

I cannot express enough how clutch this chocolate oatmeal is to someone who is an extreme chocoholic like myself. It really does satisfy the craving and just positively sets up my mood for the rest the day. The almond butter adds that nutty but creamy flavor, nutrients, healthy fats, and helps keep you satiated and energized for a while which comes so handy for a busy morning ahead. This also, in its roundabout way, encourages me to eat more fruits. What better way to sneak some fruits in than putting them on top of a bowl of pure chocolate?

Of course, I’m still going to let myself have my necessary KitKat fix every now and then, but having this chocolate breakfast on a more regular basis definitely helps me cut down on artificial sugars which hopefully reduces my risk of potential complications such as diabetes. Overall, I’m getting more natural nutrients from less processed ingredients which is a win in my book.

Definitely try this and let me know! I promise it will change your life!

xoxo,

franchette
